- Title
Detergents and the Skin.

- Abstract
The article reports that hand eczema in housewives was once attributed to soap, but in the post-war decades synthetic detergents have become a particular target, perhaps because of the great impact of advertising. Their introduction, however, has not led to any notable increase in housewife's eczema nor has the large sale of dishwashers and washing machines over the last 10 years led to any conspicuous decline. Few dermatologists doubt that detergents may influence a dermatitis from cumulative insults, but many believe that this is mainly due to an enhancement of the effect of adverse climatic conditions and penetration of other irritants or of allergens such as perfume and nickel.
