- Abstract
This article reports on pesticide trials in Southwest England, to study the control of narcissus bulb fly. In the first trial three cultivars of bulbs which had been planted for two years were tested in three replicates. Aldrin wettable powder added to the standard hot water treatment gave good control. Chlordane applied in the drills following standard HWT was almost as effective as the aldrin dip. Trichloronate did not give much protection during the first year, and was apparently less effective in the second year. On first year figures, the highest flower pick came from the control plots, suggesting that all the chemicals had slight phytotoxic effects. In the second year good control of attack gave good flower picks. In a second trial, which is still in progress, the same cultivars are under test in three replicates. The combined dip was formulated to contain 0.23 percent a.i. thionazin and 0.2 percent a.i. aldrin, and bulbs were dipped for 3 hr. Aldrin with or without thionazin gave a highly significant decrease in damage and increase in weight of clean bulbs. Thionazin-treated bulbs have given a better flower pick than the controls, but bulb weights were lower. A third trial is still running in which the above cultivars were replicated four times.
