- Abstract
This article discusses a case of stercoral colitis, a complication of constipation, in a 57-year-old man with a history of stroke and chronic constipation. The man presented to the emergency department with hematochezia (blood in the stool) but no fever or abdominal pain. After initial tests and resuscitation, an emergent colonoscopy was performed, revealing a pseudo-lumen and a bleeding visible vessel in the sigmoid colon. The colonoscopy was terminated after a colon perforation was observed, and subsequent imaging confirmed sigmoid colon stercoral colitis with localized rupture. The man underwent surgery and was discharged two weeks later. The article emphasizes the importance of early diagnosis and emergent surgery for stercoral perforation, and suggests that an abdominal CT should be considered prior to colonoscopy in older patients with constipation and hematochezia.
