- Abstract
The present study aims to identify the social, demographic and economic characteristics of the residents of following urban squatters: Breman, Al-Harazat, Al-Muhammid and Al-Jameah in Jeddah City; and to monitor their problems and improve their situation. The researcher used the social survey method, and the questionnaire, to collect field data from a random sample of 336 heads of households. The study concluded that there are statistically significant differences between random neighborhoods in most characteristics such as number of family members, marital status of the head of household, number of married children ; the number of wives of the head of the household; the level of parental education; the level of family health; the desire to move from the neighborhood; the prevalence of some social and economic problems; to what extend are they satisfied about their residence and district, the case of security, and the strength of their neighborhood relation; the level of education for their children until the age of 15 years old; the number of illiterate children, and those in the secondary level; the destination of treatment; the average monthly income; and the salary as a source of income; the number of family workers; the standard of living; the number of trips abroad for tourism; participating in productive household projects; the reasons for non-participation; the commensurate consumption of households with their income; the development of a monthly budget for their expenditures commensurate with their income; the ownership and status of certain electrical appliances and means of communication and transportation. The number of rooms, kitchens and toilets in the household; the presence of divorced women in the family; the sources of income from real estate, social security assistance, relatives assistance, and self-employment; the saving of a householder from his monthly income; the assessment of the material return from participating in productive family projects; family problems of “debts, inability to meet the requirements of the family, and lack of a means of conductors”. The researcher concluded with some recommendations that may contribute to the development of urban squatters in Jeddah.
