- Abstract
Infections in health services are considered a public health problem, with an impact on morbidity and mortality, time of internment, costs of diagnosis and therapeutic procedures, as well as on the patient, family and community. Therefore this study was aimed at identifying the prevalence, location, microorganism and antimicrobial susceptibility of nosocomial infections in intensive care units. The population consisted of 702 adult patients in intensive care in the period January to December 2007. Data collection proceeded by consulting nosocomial infection active search cards and filling out a form. The data were compiled in tables and figures. Hospital infection was found in 202 (28.77%) patients, predominantly in the months of December, October, September and August; 132 (64.1%) were characterized as respiratory infection. The main microorganisms responsible for infections were Pseudomonas aeruginosa 33.8% (51), S. aureus 25.2% (38), Acinetobacter sp. 12.6% (19), Enterobacter agglomerans 8.6% (13), Pseudomonas sp. 7.3% (11), E. coli 4.6% (7), Klebsiella pneumoniae 4.6% (7) and Candida sp. 3.3% (5). In the antibiotic susceptibility tests, the microorganisms demonstrated high sensitivity to beta-lactams. The difficulty of preventing hospital infections increases in the intensive care environment, owing to the compromised immune system of the patient, the variety of multi-resistant microorganisms and the use of broad-spectrum antimicrobials.
