- Abstract
Intestinal parasites still constitute a serious public health problem, perpetuating itself in Brazil and other countries, causing illness in individuals, being the study of its prevalence one of the best indicators of socioeconomic status of a population and it may be associated to several determinants. The aim of the study was to investigate the prevalence and factors associated with intestinal parasitism in children of urban area of Grajaú - MA municipality. A cross-sectional, analytical study with children aged 2 to 10 years. The sample consisted of 143 individuals. Univariate analysis was performed and, in the second phase, logistic regression models were adjusted to study associated factors. Were considered linked to the variable response those with a p-value <0.05. The prevalence of infection was 60.14%, ranging from 13.95 to 86.05% between the positivity helminths and protozoa, respectively. The increase in the age of the children, as well as the last query time interval, were associated with a higher occurrence of parasites in general, while the increase in mother's age and their knowledge of the symptoms of parasitic diseases were associated with a lower occurrence of cases. The study noted that certain factors are associated with greater or lesser occurrence of intestinal parasites in the municipality studied. Thus, more efficient control measures should be designed for the population, taking in account the associations described as a way to reduce the prevalence and incidence of these infections.
