- Abstract
The person affected by any thoracic or abdominal surgical procedure is at risk of developing postoperative complications; of the systems affected, the respiratory system is most susceptible to such complications. Cough is the main autonomous physiological response for the removal of secretions within the bronchial tract, and many postoperative thoracic and abdominal surgery patients present fear of coughing. The aim of this study was to analyze the nature of the fears regarding coughing in these patients. The research used a qualitative narrative type approach, performed with seven patients admitted to the Municipal Hospital of Imperatriz. Data were collected by means of targeted questioning during the extension project "Education Project on Breathing Exercises (PEER)". A semistructured questionnaire was used, with the responses of the patients being recorded and then transcribed. The data were analyzed using the content analysis technique. When asked why coughing was suppressed, most patients said they were "afraid to open the points". In conclusion, the postoperative patients presented fear of coughing; this postoperative fear could be alleviated by means of a health education program and technical interventions to improve pain symptoms of patients.
