- Title
Reform or Revolution? French Politics at the Crossroads.
- Authors
Drake, Helen
- Abstract
Lying just below the surface of these familiar visuals is a crucial political trigger: President Emmanuel Macron's intention to reform the state pension and, specifically, to raise the legal retirement age from 62 to 64, in increments, by 2030. Since Socialist Party President Francois Mitterrand lowered the retirement age to 60 in 1983, his successors and their governments have reformed pensions in the face of significant opposition. Le Pen's success mercilessly pointed to Macron's failure: far from rendering the far right irrelevant, as he had hoped in 2017, the RN was now the largest single party of opposition in the Assembly.
