Reports on testing for the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) at 16 sites in the United States during 2000-2003, with a focus on outcome from late versus early testing. Discussion of how HIV-testing patterns and demographic characteristics of sex, race/ethnicity, and mode of exposure among HIV-infected people were analyzed by the United States Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Prevention; Data from the CDC Supplement to HIV/AIDS Surveillance (SHAS) project; The CDC editorial note discussing the reasons for early and late testing for HIV and the impact on treatment opportunities.
