- Abstract
Pain labeled as chronic pain causes suffering for the sick and their relatives and, in addition to the social costs, it leads to high economic costs for the social system. However, pain is not fundamentally pathological, rather it is an anthropological constant. Pain not only ensures physical survival, but also enters into social relationships as emotional expressions, updates identities and individual positions in the social network. This contribution therefore addresses the fuzziness between pain as an unpleasant sensation and pain as illness. To examine pain practices and interpretations of pain associated with headaches biographical interviews are conducted. The result shows that, according to the approach of Pierre Bourdieu (1982), headaches are incorporated into reproductive and living conditions typical of the milieu, which both structure the everyday understanding of pain and determine which medical interpretations are accepted by patients.
