Pundits, politicians, and professors regularly pronounce that the middle class is the bulwark of democracy, but empirical studies produce more equivocal results about the relationship. In addition, given that state employment includes a wide range of occupations, it might be helpful to understand what kinds of state employment are especially likely to dampen support for democracy.
