- Abstract
Amphibian declines worldwide have gained much attention, with overexploitation identified as one of the major causes of this decline. This survey was carried out to determine the species of anurans caught from the wild and sold in Kano and Zaria markets in Nigeria. Structured questionnaires were distributed to respondents which included consumers (n = 53), traders (n = 44) and fishermen (n = 22). African Tiger Frog (Hoplobatrachus occipitalis) was the only anuran sold in Kano and Zaria markets. It was caught from the wild from Kano, Kaduna, Katsina and Taraba States and from neighbouring countries including Chad and Niger Republic. Most consumers in Kano and Zaria used frogs as a source of food. Traders transported frogs to the south-east and south-west of Nigeria (Ondo, Ogun, Abia and Lagos states) after processing (smoking or drying) them. Frogs were mainly caught in the dry season by fishermen. This study revealed that H. occipitalis is the preferred species probably due to its large size, accessibility and thus being caught in large quantities. This may lead to its depletion in the wild. Captive breeding of this species might be necessary to supplement the high demand.
