- Abstract
The album “Illustrated Official Tribute of the Imperial Qing” took the Qianlong court in the Qing dynasty ten years to complete, making it an important illustrated record of relations between the Qing court and other states as well as minorities under its dominion. It represents the transition from “illustrations of barbarians” to “official exposition” and finally to “illustrations of official tribute.” Recently discovered is the album “Clothing of the Miao, Yao, Li, and Zhuang Minorities” and “Official Tribute, Album Six.” The former includes the original draft “Illustrated Album of Barbarians in Sichuan Province” in “Illustrated Official Tribute of the Imperial Qing.” The latter is an early painted version of “Illustrated Official Tribute of the Imperial Qing.” Both of them reflect some of the conditions for the initial creation of “Illustrated Official Tribute of the Imperial Qing,” providing valuable and important material for researching it. This study examines both of these works to examine and clarify some of the facts behind the early painting of “Illustrated Official Tribute of the Imperial Qing.”
