- Title
Eternal France: Crisis and National Self-Perception in France, 1870-2005.
- Abstract
The article discusses moments of national crisis in France between 1870 and 2005, commenting on their relation to French national self-perception. It particularly examines the view of France as an ancestral homeland, or an "eternal France." The author comments on French defeat in the Franco-Prussian War, conflicts with Germany over the French regions of Alsace and Lorraine, and the occupation of France by Nazi Germany in 1940. He also explores French saint and military leader Joan of Arc and Gallic chief Vercingétorix as national heroes. Debates over the Maastricht Treaty in 1992 and the European Constitutional Treaty in 2005 are also considered.
