- Abstract
This document provides information on the management of blood donors with culture-positive platelet donations. It includes details from three different blood collection services in the United States, Oman, and a hospital center. Each service describes their type of blood collection, annual volume, types of platelets offered, culture instruments used, sample sources, volume removed for culture, timing of sample inoculation, culture inoculation practices, hold time before product release, longest allowable platelet expiration, implementation year of current culture method, written procedures, and evaluations required in case of contamination. The document emphasizes the importance of donor management and investigation of culture results. Additionally, the document provides guidelines for evaluating contamination with different types of pathogens, outlines factors considered in donor management, and discusses the protocols for managing screening platelet culture instrument alarms. It also provides information on the culture practices and protocols for screening platelets for bacterial contamination in different countries, including Brazil, Canada, New Zealand, and the United States. Each country has written procedures for managing culture instrument alarms, evaluating contamination scenarios, and managing donors. Overall, the document offers insights into the specific practices followed by blood collection services in different countries regarding the screening and management of bacterial contamination in platelet products.
