- Abstract
Three problems present in the limited publications on the Shaowu dialect are discussed: (1) The reason for its similarities with both Kakka and Min can be traced to the early migration of people from Gan to Min and the establishment of the prefecture of Jian'an (a Min-speaking center which has been its administrative center since the third century; (2) The development of the Ch'ieh-yün *- p final to -n final in the Shaowu dialect was at some earlier stage by way of a *-t final. This *-p → -t phenomenon had been observed by the local phonologist Huang Gongshao as early a the 13th century; (3) The change of *1- to s- can be fully explained in terms of tonal behavior, i.e. 1- changes to s- only when the tone is [+check- ed], in the case of non-checked tones, 1-remains unchanged.
