- Abstract
The contribution reflects on recent proposals for a multidimensional perspective on norm dynamics and discusses their added value concerningthe concept of norm clusters, which is situated as a meso-level between individual norms as the basic unit and superordinate normative structures at the macro-level. Based on complexity-theoretical considerations, I argue that these dimensions should not be considered in isolation from each other. For a multidimensional understanding of norm dynamics, it is precisely the relations and interactions - comparable to synapses - between the respective dimensions that are essential. Their quality could shed light on the persistence or fragility of particular norms (and their meanings) and the resilience of normative orders. Such an approach poses some practical challenges for norm researchers and brings into focus other methodological approaches to the study of norm dynamics. At the same time, a multidimensional perspective on norm dynamics allows for a better mapping and a deeper understanding of real-world contexts, i.e. the plurality of normative entitlements and polycentric norm governance.
