- Abstract
This paper aims to enhance the reflection about a meta-debate in the academic international relations (IB) on the foundation of securitization theory, which has recently been criticized for reproducing racism. Quickly, the debate polarized in public and academic audiences and once again focused on academic work as a security problem itself. In the course of the polarized debate, which literally securitized itself, less was said about the actual argument of the critique: What is an appropriate way to deal with theoretical foundations that have emerged in critical systems of thought, and in what publics is what kind of criticism of academic work appropriate? In doing so, this paper takes the scholarly debate itself as its object and uses critique as a sensitizing concept to thereby understand the order of critique of security. Ultimately, the aim is to contribute to the investigation of the function of critique, which includes the scientific actors themselves, but also their context and public.
