- Abstract
For the past 200 years, dentistry in Australia has been a slowly evolving health profession based predominantly on widely distributed, small, 'individualistic' private practices. However, it can be argued that current changes in dentistry in Australia are not a passing phase, but rather a step-change in the provision model of dental care. No single evolutionary pressure is responsible for the situation, but instead a constellation of pressures have brought the model of private practice to a tipping point. This analysis focuses on four key elements driving the evolution of traditional models of private sector dentistry in Australia that are reshaping the landscape and have dominated the professional debate: economic cycles; internationalisation; workforce changes; and corporatisation. The past 20 years have seen an increase in a private practice, small-business driven model of care, which is exposing dentistry to economic pressures that historically were not as strong. Lessons can be learned from the complex interactions between business and healthcare at play in Australian dentistry, and the greater good of society must remain at the forefront of professional planning for the future.
