- Abstract
The article explores the feature butterflies found in the plays of William Shakespeare and their purpose. Topics discussed are the symbolism of hopefulness, humanity's capacity for kindness, paradoxical power, represented by gilded butterflies in the plays "King Lear" and "Coriolanus," and the element of transformation or metamorphosis in "A Midsummer Night's Dream" which is said to be have been borrowed in the Ovidian poem "Metamorphoses."
