- Abstract
Dr. Rafael Laguens, the President of the World Veterinary Association (WVA), discusses his perspectives on global health leadership, the future of veterinary medicine, challenges in veterinary medical education, and key priorities for WVA and World Medical Association (WMA) members. He emphasizes the interconnectedness between humans, animals, and the environment in protecting public health and highlights the importance of collaboration between different international organizations. Dr. Laguens envisions that veterinary medicine will gain more attention in terms of care for companion animals and biodiversity conservation, and he identifies challenges such as zoonotic diseases, antimicrobial resistance, food safety, climate change, and weak healthcare infrastructure. He suggests that veterinary medicine professionals can lead efforts to address these challenges through education, surveillance, and a multisectoral approach. Finally, he outlines three key priorities for WVA and WMA members in the next five years, including strengthening professional relationships, organizing global conferences, and collaborating on joint working groups.
