- Abstract
The geological museum operating at the Institute of Geology and Geography is accessible for a wide public and popularizes the variety of Earth crust minerals and rocks. The nucleus of the museum is represented by the collection of minerals, rocks and manufactured articles donated in 1965 by a Lithuanian Alfonsa's Žukelis (1899-1977), who used to live in Sverdlovsk (Russian Urals area). Now all the collections of the museum contain over 4500 specimens of different contents. A. Žukelis' collection is the heart of the museum. The Lithuanian Museum of Geology was established in Vievis (Elektrénai Municipality) on the base of the Drill-core Storage of the Institute of Geology, which was built in 1980, and several permanent exhibitions. Meantime, an1 open-air exhibition of erratic boulders (stones) from Lithuania is displayed for public in a 4-hectares area surrounding the Museum building. The memorial exhibition of Academician Professor Juozas Dalinkevičius (1893-1980), eminent scientist and promoter of the Lithuanian geological school, is under display. The drill-core storage, personal archives of Lithuanian geologists and large depository of geological collections can be also visited at the Museum.
