- Abstract
Art historian Rosalind P. Blakesley's book, "Women Artists in the Reign of Catherine the Great," explores the lives and contributions of women artists in eighteenth-century Russia. Blakesley acknowledges the lack of Russian women artists in her study and the absence of evidence for a strong subculture of women's art during this time. Despite these limitations, Blakesley uncovers the hidden stories of women artists who played a significant role in shaping Russia's art scene and Catherine's reign. The book challenges traditional narratives and highlights the resilience and talent of these women artists, who faced harassment and discrimination but still managed to build successful careers.
