An essay is presented on the blackness in the Afro-Ecuadorian musical performance in Esmeraldas province in Ecuador. It offers a history on the "black space" in Ecuador and its connection with the marimba dance. It then cites the beginning of the pan-Africanist ideology during the Spanish colonization.
