- Title
Variations in proximity as a tool for audience engagement.
- Authors
DYSON, CLARE
- Abstract
The article discusses various aspects of the proximity of dance audiences to performers and of audience engagement at an experiential level. The fixed proximity format is said to be still popular in the West but questions of relevance, lower audience attendance and engagement levels have been raised. Various factors in the audience proximity scale are discussed. It is suggested that when an audience and performers are close to each other, there is a feeling of intimacy and authenticity. A critique of the dance work "Being There" is also presented.
