- Title
Think Twice Before Paying for Patient Referrals.
- Authors
McIntyre, John
- Abstract
The article discusses the practice of third-party organizations in Ontario that refer patients to dentists for a fee. These organizations operate differently but typically require dentists to pay a fee per referred patient. While this may seem beneficial for dental clinics, dentists need to be aware of their professional obligations before entering into such arrangements. There are professional obligations outlined in the Dentistry Act and the Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario's Guidelines on Conflict of Interest that impact a dentist's ability to pay for patient referrals. Dentists should seek legal advice if they have already signed an agreement with a third-party referral company. The article emphasizes the importance of dentists understanding their professional obligations and not assuming that these arrangements are acceptable just because other dentists are engaging in them.
