- Abstract
Drawing on our experience as Play Seminar Directors at the Utah Shakespeare Festival, this essay discusses selected moments from audience discussions in 2018, supplemented with interviews with artists and critics' reviews, on the season theme of "Encountering the Other." This essay explores the ways the practice of sustained post-show discussions encouraged productive civil discourse among patrons. It discusses methods and occasions that counter the intolerance increasingly manifest in recent public discourse in the USA, including approaches that function effectively in predominantly conservative areas of the USA. We explore theatre (in particular, free public play seminars) as a powerful space for meaningful civil discourse in a polarized political climate, making a call to action for more regional theaters to consider using audience discussions to help develop a more inclusive community.
