- Abstract
"Scary Monsters: A novel in two parts" by Michelle de Kretser is a book that explores migration and identity through the stories of two characters, Lili and Lyle. Lili, an Australian migrant teaching in France in the 1980s, reflects on her experiences as a young woman finding her own footing and struggling with her sense of self. Lyle's story is set in a dystopic near-future Australia and follows his experiences and reflections on being an immigrant. The novel, which recently won the 2023 Rathbones Folio Prize for Fiction, offers insightful explorations of identity and relationships in contemporary society.
