- Abstract
The article discusses the efficiency and productivity of social organizations and the role of government in assisting them to address economic and social issues in the United States. The exemption from tax that the government imposes to registered charitable institutions provide substantial benefit on groups that rely on private donations and volunteers. The percentage of nonprofit organizations that use volunteers by subsector are presented with the human services sector posing the biggest rate with 80.3 percent. It is noted that the assistance that the federal government provides to independent, philantrophically supported, nonprofit organizations cannot be implied as part of the government's involvement and support.
