The article reports on developments in the textile fiber markets worldwide in 2002, based on figures from the fiber and textile machinery group Saurer AG of Arbon, Switzerland. Man-made fibers increased by 6 percent and dominated the market with a share of 60 percent. World consumption of cotton reached record-level in 2002 due to low prices. Wool, on the other hand, continued its downward trend since 1989. Man-made fiber production increased by 6 percent. World polyester production increased by 7 percent in 2002, with Asia contributing 80 percent of the total output. World production of polyamide fibers increased by 4 percent to 3.9 million tons. World production of acrylic fibers increased by 7 percent to 2.7 million tons, with Asia gaining more market shares. World output of cellulosic fibers increased by 2 percent to 2.7 million tons, with Asia contributing 59 percent of the total output.
