- Abstract
This article presents information on surveys related to sexual activities. Surveys that ask participants the age at which they initiated sexual activity probably elicit quite accurate responses, according to findings from a longitudinal study conducted in Australia. A total of 302 men and 268 women completed a psychiatric interview by telephone in 1992-1993, at ages 28-73, and a follow-up interview about 15 months later. Respondents were asked at each interview when they first had intercourse, and 84 percent reported the same age both times or ages that differed by no more than a year. The likelihood of inconsistency grew very slightly as respondents' age increased, but it was not related to their educational attainment, a variety of personality measures and psychiatric diagnoses, or the length of time that had elapsed between interviews. Half of women whose reports differed by more than two years had experienced sexual abuse; however, most of those with a history of sexual abuse reported their age at first intercourse consistently in two surveys.
