LETTER TO JOHN.
- Authors
Willemen, Paul
- Abstract
The article presents the response of Paul Willemen on John Ellis' piece titled "On Pornography." It notes that Willemen draws attention to pornography as a regime of looking. It reports that Willemen elaborates the notion of the fourth look, the possibility of being overlooked in the act of looking, which gains particular force in the area of pornography where the viewer is looking at something at which for reasons of internal or external censorship, the viewer is not supposed to be looking. Willemen argues that pornographic imagery must be seen as both determining and determined by competing discourses and institutions, and that changes in the public presence and acceptability of pornographic imagery are accounted for by the institutionalization of the fourth look.
