- Abstract
This article discusses the diagnostic challenges in Wilson's disease (WD), a rare metabolic disorder characterized by copper accumulation in the liver and brain. The clinical manifestations of WD can vary widely, including hepatic, neurologic, and psychiatric symptoms. Steatosis, or fatty infiltration of the liver, is a common early pathological change in WD and can mimic other liver diseases such as alcoholic liver disease and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. The article highlights the importance of clinical suspicion and a combination of clinical and laboratory findings for diagnosing WD, as well as the introduction of a new nomenclature for steatotic liver disease (SLD) that helps classify different causes of steatosis. The authors emphasize the need for increased awareness and early detection of WD, especially in patients with abnormal liver tests or unexplained histologic findings.
