- Title
CLAIMING VISIBILITY: WOMEN IN PUBLIC/PUBLIC WOMEN IN THE UNITED STATES, 1865-1910.
- Authors
BOYLAN, ANNE M.
- Abstract
An essay is presented on women in public or public women in the U.S. during the period 1865-1910. The essay asserts that women in the U.S. claimed visibility for their organizations and for themselves through public activism after the Civil War. It states that this has distanced them from the reticence that characterized most voluntary associations in the antebellum era. It further adds that women made themselves visible by changing public spaces, building monuments and exercising their rights.
