- Abstract
Giuliana Bruno's book, "Rovine con vista. Napoli e il cinema di Elvira Notari," explores the life and work of Elvira Notari, the first Italian filmmaker and founder of Dora Film. Notari made over sixty feature films and one hundred short films in Naples between 1906 and 1930, but her work faced censorship due to its representation of female desire and regionalisms. After Notari was forced to stop making films, her work was largely forgotten and lost, with only three of her feature films remaining available today. Bruno's book, originally published in English in 1993, examines Notari's films and their cultural significance. The book was later translated and published in Italy, but due to distribution issues, it was out of print for many years. The new edition of the book, titled "Napoli e il cinema di Elvira Notari," highlights the rediscovery of Notari's lost cinema and the changing societal reception of Bruno's research. Bruno's book uses a method of montage to piece together information about Notari's films, relying on secondary sources such as advertisements, letters, and newspaper articles. The book also explores the challenges of writing about a filmmaker and body of work that have been largely forgotten. Bruno argues for a moving and active spectatorship that embraces the gaps and voids in Notari's archive.
