The development and use of local anesthetics for intraoperative anesthesia and postsurgical analgesia is considered one of the most important advancements in dental science.long acting bupivacaine (EXPAREL) is a novel prolonged-release formulation of bupivacaine indicated for infiltration into the surgical site to produce postsurgical analgesia. The aim of this study was to assess the knowledge, attitude and awareness of long acting bupivacaine among dental students.A cross sectional study was conducted during the academic year in December 2019 among the undergraduate students of Saveetha dental college, Saveetha university, Chennai. One hundred students were randomly recruited in the study including 3rd year, final year and intern students. All students in the study voluntarily completed the questionnaire consisting of 10 close ended questions. A total of 100 responses were obtained, of which all responses were included. The subsequent data collected was analysed using SPSS Version 20.0. The results of the study revealed that there was a statistically significant increase in awareness of long acting bupivacaine, the importance of postoperative pain management and need for dentists to be updated about recent advances (p value-0.00) among interns than third and final years. However, still there is a great need for undergraduate students to update themselves regarding the recent advances in dentistry.
