- Abstract
This analysis looks at the staged »wartime wedding« photos of German soldiers during the First and Second World Wars. In considering four pictorial examples, the discussion first turns to the significance of the »wartime wedding « topos in the photographic representation of couples—mostly in homosocial military contexts far from home. It then goes on to show how certain (sometimes transgressive) photographic representations of couples gave their protagonists a space for staging the self in ways that deviated from the conventional themes of the »wartime wedding. « The focus of investigation is on the extent to which such stagings of the self, especially in terms of cross-dressing, contributed to the stabilization and/or destabilization of gender norms during both World Wars.
