- Abstract
The use of elastic bandage in the areas of speech therapy and physiotherapy is a technique often applied, with reports of efficiency, however, with the need for a greater number of studies. Furthermore, its use needs to be further deepened in areas such as dentistry and their specialties, aiming to expand the treatment options. The objective of the study was to show results of application of the elastic bandage in three cases of dental midline deviation functional mandibular submitted to treatment of rapid expansion of the maxilla. Type of study: Report of three cases. Three children ages five, eight and ten years old, who were in growth and orthodontic/orthopedic treatment of rapid expansion of the maxilla. After observed change in mandibular positioning, with a standard deviation of functional dental midline, the expansion of the maxilla with Hyrax appliance was performed. Concomitant with the expansion, the elastic bandage was applied over the area of the zygomaticus major muscle, on the opposite side to the standard deviation of the mean line. There were two or three weekly applications, remaining in place for at least 18 consecutive hours. There was significant improvement in the standard deviation of the middle line, with modifications that would be visible from a month of use of the technique. The midline diverted had its total correction or reduction of diversion. The use of elastic bandage on the zygomaticus major muscle region, during the orthodontic treatment of rapid expansion of the maxilla, assisted in the correction of mandibular deviation of the middle line, representing an alternative still not used in dentistry/orthodontics.
