- Abstract
The article focuses on a study conducted by researchers from Queen's University and York University in Toronto, Ontario, which found that the phenomenon of calcium decline called aquatic osteoporosis is causing widespread transformation of aquatic food webs in boreal lakes in North America. Adam Jeziorski, lead author of the study, says that once calcium decreases below a certain threshold, some keystone species can no longer reproduce. A water flea, Daphnia, known to be an important component of several aquatic foodwebs, was examined by the researchers.
