- Abstract
In modern times, the Hanafī-Māturīdī Kalām system was generally perceived as anti-Sufi or distant from Sufism because of its cautious attitude towards ilhām (divine inspiration). However, by analysing the term ilhām extensively and presenting the term within a broader spectrum, both Māturīdī and Hanafī-Māturīdī theologians have accepted the existence of ilhām in their works. However, they did not accept ilhām as an objective source of knowledge. In parallel, Sufis who are influential in the geography of Transoxiana also have a parallel understanding of the Hanafī-Māturīdī theorists thought that inspiration is not a binding and objective source of information. This indicates that the main criticism of Hanafī-Māturīdī kalam on inspiration was not directly targeting Sufism and Sufis. Although, there were Sufis in Sufism who tried to justify this criticism, it is quite apparent that the target in the debate is the Shiite-Bātınī groups. In this article, the meaning of ilhām as Hanafī-Māturīdī theorists construe and the epistemic value of ilhām in their thought will be examined in connection with revelation. Additionally, the possible reasons of Hanafī-Māturīdī theorists' approach towards ilhām will be examined by evaluating the Sufis and Shiite-Bātınī groups that exist around the Hanafī-Māturīdī cultural domain.
