Economic Democracy and the Democratizing of Research: The Approach of the Swedish Labor Movement.
- Authors

- Abstract
The Swedish labor movement recognizes the interpenetration of research, education and the process of democratization. Over the last fifteen years, it radically reformulated not only its program of labor and social reforms, but also its program of labor education and research, as of September 1982. In this article, the author offers an overview of labor's research policy as it relates to democratic decision-making in Sweden. First, background is offered on how labor attempts to influence the way research policy is determined at the macro social level, and how resources are allocated to various research priorities. Then, on the micro level the author focuses on the involvement of workers in research projects, problem definition, and problem-solving in their working environments and through their local union organizations. The article also presents information on the ongoing research into democratizing decision-making within the structure of the labor movement. Labor's increasing concern during the 1970s with the determination of research policy was preceded by a long period of playing a key role in the elaborate, and in some ways unique, Swedish process of formulating and implementing social policy change.
