- Abstract
The generation of nursing evidence is a long established tradition in Singapore. However, evidence of the impact on nursing practice, and on patient outcomes is less visible, and remains difficult to measure. The challenge of demonstrating impact on practice and patient outcomes is not unique to Singapore; it remains one of the dominant challenges facing healthcare systems and services globally. Evidence-based practice is consistently described in the literature as a series of activities. These usually include: developing a clinically relevant and answerable question; searching to identify appropriate literature that answers the question; critically appraising the quality and reliability of the identified evidence; embedding the evidence in clinical decision making resources for point of care delivery and; evaluating the impact on nursing practice and patient outcomes. In Singapore, JBI centres of excellence have a focus on integration of research with practice communities. Combining the practice interests of nurses with the tools and resources for best practice is enabling of local, clinically relevant changes for patients. The lessons learnt from the innovations in Singapore are that practice change does not need to be complex in order to be effective; and that practice change should include evaluation.
