- Abstract
This research aims to outline the exhibition models of archaeological collections and museums between the eighteenth and the first half of the nineteenth century. During this period, museum displays became increasingly attentive to the needs of unskilled visitors. The survey makes use of both recent studies and an in-depth analysis of contemporary sources. It emerges that in the course of a few decades, private collections and museums, not yet completely open to the public, were often transformed, also due to the changed historicalpolitical context. The new institutions became aware of the expectations of an increasingly organized public opinion and addressed to an ever growing number of unskilled visitors, both Italian and international. Archaeological displays at the end of the eighteenth century and in the first decades of the nineteenth century not only relied on the quality or the scientific importance of collections, but also on the ability to contextualize objects and excite visitors.
