- Abstract
In the new catalogue of Fermo's Civic Art Gallery the enigmatic «Benigni», mentioned by local literature and critically firstly recognized by Amico Ricci, has been identified as «Benigno Vagnolini», made known by Giuseppe Fabiani (1961), and as «Benigno Vangelini», active in Rome, by Maria Barbara Guerrieri Borsoi in 2009. The painter enlivened the artistic environment of the city that had welcomed the Night by Rubens and was preparing to receive the Pentecost by Lanfranco, both coming from Rome. In this study, the discovery of one drawing, two paintings and some unpublished documents allow us to propose hypotheses on his training, to offer an accurate profile of the artist, and to enlighten the milieu in which he had working and the relationships with the city patrons.
