- Abstract
This article describes the books that were reviewed in the December 2004 issue of the "Academy of Management Learning & Education." This issue of Resource Reviews is dedicated to those works whose authors have sought to comprehend the concept and process of coaching. Rather than having an inclusive list, and obviously given page limitations, the journal chose those works that are more current and comprehensive. The first two reviews, by Steve Meisel and Bernardo Garcia, focus on the practicality of coaching from a skill perspective. Their reviews stress the use of coaching as a vital device for managers to include in their arsenal of technical and behavioral skills. The third review, by Ruth Axelrod, centers on a comprehensive handbook of coaching. The work is noteworthy because it contains conceptual models as well as an exhaustive bibliography. Researchers alone would find the bibliography helpful. The final review, by Ram Subramanian, provides an interesting slant on coaching--taking it from a multicultural perspective. Pragmatic tools that aid in managing cultural differences accompany this unique book. Taken as a whole, these reviews cover four essential works on coaching. For the practitioner, they would seem to be mandatory reading to complement the skill base. For the academic, they would appear to be necessary for inclusion in courses on management skills, leadership, and organizational behavior.
