- Abstract
The Saxon mining industry in the Ore Mountains, which is considered the birthplace of modern mining, was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site in July 2019. The region is praised for its scientific and technological mining innovations and its unique mountainous cultural landscape. Mining began in the Middle Ages with the discovery of silver veins, leading to an influx of miners and the development of a mining district. Prominent figures such as Georg Agricola and Abraham Gottlob Werner made significant contributions to mineralogy and geosciences. Nowadays, there is a growing interest in the abandoned ore deposits in the Ore Mountains, particularly in lithium and tin reserves. Deutsche Lithium GmbH plans to start producing lithium hydroxide by the end of 2026, while Saxore Bergbau GmbH expects an annual tin production of approximately 3,000 tons.
