- Abstract
Wounds are breaks in the skin, derived from endogenous and exogenous factors, and it is a problem that affects the general population, not delimiting ethnicity, gender, race or color, being considered in Brazil and the world as a public health problem. The bandages are designed to protect them against exogenous infection and trauma, promoting the absorption of exudate, keeping the moisture and reducing pain, and provide a higher standard image of the patient/client. However, the nursing staff should be able to treat such wounds, because they are directly involved in the wound dressing procedure, leading to a reduction of complications. The objective of this study was to evaluate the theoretical and practical knowledge of 40 nurses (assistants and technicians) of 4 hospitals of Uba/MG, in the following items: wound assessment and wound dressing. It was found that the evaluated professionals were well qualified concerning the purpose of a wound dressing, however, a high percentage does not have knowledge of the mechanism of pharmaceuticals action. Also, the participants who have taken courses and/or training did not make so many errors. Based on the results, it makes evident the difficulty of the evaluated professionals in wound assessment and this fact is directly related to the lack of specific training, and a possible lack of knowledge about the theme.
