- Abstract
Much is known about Buck O'Neil's later contributions to baseball, but this article explores one of his earliest seasons, 1936. The argument is that O'Neil's baseball career was influenced greatly by the 1936 season. Much of the young player's development can be credited to his manager, Winfield Welch, who had a reputation for molding young talent. O'Neil also had the chance to play with and against some of the greats, who likewise helped him learn the game of baseball.
