- Abstract
However, monkeys do not develop clinical disease from SARS-CoV-2 and pulmonary lesions are often focal and mild, and they rapidly resolve with virologic control. The cause was identified as a novel CoV, SARS-CoV, which may have originated from wild animals in a Chinese city food market. However, the NHP model that develops mild asymptomatic COVID-19 pneumonia complements the Syrian hamster model that develops clinical disease with severe pneumonia, for mechanistic studies into the disparate clinicopathological manifestations of SARS-CoV-2. We believe that this special issue with emphasis on SARS-CoV-2 pathology will complement and clarify our current perspective of COVID-19 from experimental as well as natural diseases in animals.
