- Abstract
Recent studies show that many species are gradually expanding their range northward in response to climate change. Because of its northerly location in North America, Quebec (Canada) could offer a potential climate refugium for a number of these. This article documents the potential for, and possible pertinence of, using assisted migration as an adaptation measure and a means of bypassing the threats posed by climate change for species at risk in Quebec. It provides a literature review of cases of assisted migration from around the world, highlighting the associated benefits, risks and constraints of this option. The criteria for identifying suitable candidate species include several biological traits frequently seen in species at risk. The analysis of three case studies, that of the spring salamander (Gyrinophilus porphyriticus), meadow thistle (Cirsium scariosum var. scariosum) and brown snake (Storeria dekayi), identified the meadow thistle as a suitable candidate for assisted migration. Various recommendations are provided regarding the use of this approach, including the need to initiate discussion between researchers, governmental and non-governmental organizations, and to propose provincial guidelines for the use of this practice as a means of improving conservation efforts in the face of climate change.
